USSR's gifts to foreign state leaders
Annotation
Soviet diplomacy was very reverent about, and took a practical Soviet approach toward, the tradition of presenting gifts to visiting heads of state. Personal sympathies, geopolitical needs and benefits, the status of the country, etc. were all taken into account. Thus, in 1965, the most expensive gifts went to guests from Iran, headed by the Shah, with almost 12,000 rubles spent. The Yugoslavs and Tito were presented with 7,420 rubles worth of gifts. The Guineans were allotted approximately the same amount (7,300 rubles). Meanwhile, the representatives of Sweden and the Republic of the Congo received the most modest gifts, worth 990 and 728 rubles, respectively.
