Today the Bridge Team is sharing a rare archival document – a special report from the USSR Ministry of State Security, dated October 11, 1948, and classified "Top Secret" until 2013. It concerns the arrest of Maria Varseeva, an employee of the Rivne airport, who had been on a Soviet wanted list since 1945 – the result of events that had unfolded four years earlier, in September 1941. Serving in a medical battalion on the Karelian Isthmus, Varseeva was encircled and taken prisoner by Finnish forces. At the camp, a Finnish counterintelligence officer interrogated her, then recruited her as an agent. She later denied ever having actually worked for Finnish intelligence – a claim the MSS investigation kept trying to disprove, tracing her possible ties to Finnish special services. The case went straight to the union level.
